Lionsgate has once again pushed back “White Bird,” the coming-of-age mostly WW2-set drama which serves as both a spin-off and a semi-prequel/semi-sequel to Stephen Chbosky’s 2017 film “Wonder”.
The project was shot way back in February 2021 and was originally slated for a September 2022 release but kept getting pushed back and has only screened so far at a single film festival back in July.
It has now been pushed back again from an unspecified release this quarter to a new October 4th 2024 release.
The film’s first trailer rather infamously belaboured the fact it was a “Wonder” spin-off with no less than three separate graphics citing the prior film’s title in under forty seconds.
A second trailer a few months later took the opposite approach, playing down the “Wonder” connection altogether and up the story’s own inspirational strengths.
In the film, Bryce Gheisar reprises his “Wonder” role as Julian, the bully and adversary of Jacob Tremblay’s Auggie, who was expelled from Beecher Prep.
Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) visits from France and recounts her experiences as a Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France in hopes of teaching him the importance of kindness.
Ariella Glaser, Orlando Schwerdt and Gillian Anderson also star in the film which was directed by Marc Forster (“Finding Neverland”) from a script by Mark Bomback based on R.J. Palacio’s 2019 graphic novel.
Palacio, Todd Lieberman, and David Hoberman produce.
