Legendary voice artist Jim Cummings, who has voiced some of Disney’s most famous characters since he began in the business in the 1980s, is losing one of his signature roles – Darkwing Duck.
A revival of the classic cartoon has been stuck in development hell for years with little in the way of updates. One of the few things known was that Cummings would continue in the role after more than 30 years of playing him.
That’s no longer the case. Speaking to Collider at the premiere of “Coyote vs. Acme” last week, Cummings said he had recorded a pilot “several years ago” which drew an enthusiastic response.
More recently though, he learned both he and original Launchpad McQuack voice actor Terry McGovern were being replaced, saying “they’re hiring somebody else to be Darkwing Duck.”
Further specifics of the project are under wraps, and Disney hasn’t commented on the long-gestating revival that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures are attached to produce.
Cummings had previously teased that the project was to be a continuation of the original 1991 series, rather than a total reboot.
