Earlier this week, filmmaker Ridley Scott confirmed that he’s planning to return to direct another “Alien” film, one that would seemingly conclude the storyline for Michael Fassbender’s David character following “Alien: Covenant”.
The project was seemingly separate from the “Alien: Romulus” sequel which was rumored to be scuttled the other week after director Fede Alvarez abruptly exited the film in September last year and was struggling to find a replacement.
20th Century Studios President of Production Steve Asbell shot down reports the film was cancelled, saying a simple “Nope”.
Rumors were Álvarez had completed a final draft and was planning to bring back Fassbender’s David, with the actor allegedly close to signing on, but Scott reportedly intervened.
Now, in a new interview with AlloCiné, Scott says he believes the franchise has drifted off course and so it appears the ‘Romulus 2’ script is being either ditched or reimagined as a ‘Covenant’ follow-up:
“I’m re-writing the next ‘Alien’ film. Actually, I suddenly went back and got involved. The one that just came out [Alien: Romulus] was OK. I think it needs some help. So, I’ve gone back in.
I’ve already got a footprint for the next Alien. We did Prometheus, and then Alien: Covenant. So, I’m picking up where we left off in Covenant with Michael Fassbender, who now thinks he’s Ozymandias.
I like the fact that AI has gone off the rails. If we go AI, the moment we discover it’s off the rails is too late. It could switch every digital thing off in the world like that. You’d have f–king chaos. It’s that kind of stuff that’s scary.”
Whether Scott would take over as director of this remains unclear right now as from the sounds of it he’s only doing writing/producing at the moment and already has a number of projects in the pipeline.
The news comes as his new film, “The Dog Stars,” opens this week and has drawn some of the weakest reviews of his career.
