“Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington will now take over the role of the vain Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series.
“Superman” and “X-Men” actor Nicholas Hoult was cast in the role the other week but had to exit the production due to scheduling conflicts.
Harington already voiced the character in Audible’s audiobook release last year of J.K. Rowling’s second book, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” so his casting is hardly out of nowhere.
Lockhart will be a central character in the second season – a famous and vainglorious wizard who becomes the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts, even as it soon becomes evident he is not qualified for the job.
Kenneth Branagh played the role in the 2002 film adaptation. The series is due to debut on December 25th on HBO and HBO Max, with the first season adapting the first book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.
The second season will begin filming this Fall.
