Just a day or so after it was first reported, Meghan Markle’s casting in the third season of Guy Ritchie‘s “The Gentlemen” series has been withdrawn according to former Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Tina Brown in a column published on Substack.

According to Brown, the backlash to the casting in the UK “was so intense, it became untenable to go forward”. She adds “this does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”

THR reached out to reps for both Markle and Ritchie who have not commented, and to Brown who said she stands by her reporting.

The news follows reports on Friday that the former “Suits” actress, who married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex, was in advanced discussions to join the third season of the show – even though the series has not yet been renewed for a third run.

The second season of the Theo James-led series premieres on Netflix in just under two weeks on September 3rd and the casting report has hijacked much of the conversation surrounding the show.

Markle stepped away from the profession in 2017 when she got engaged to Prince Harry. Harry and Markle signed an overall deal with Netflix several years ago, a deal that got downgraded last year.
