“Oak Street” Is Not A “Cloverfield” Film

A popular theory about this week’s “The End of Oak Street” feature has been shot down. That theory? That it’s a secret “Cloverfield” film.

The involvement of producer J.J. Abrams and the film’s sci-fi premise led to speculation that the film could be a surprise entry in the “Cloverfield” franchise that began in 2008 and has so far encompassed three films.

Now, users attending media screenings this week (via Reddit) have confirmed the film contains no references to anything related to the prior “Cloverfield” films.

On top of that, Abrams himself set the record straight with THR at the film’s premiere when asked about the theories:

“The only connection to our Cloverfield movies is that Ewan’s partner is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane, who we were very lucky to get to work with and who I adore. So there was that, but other than that, people are just making connections that they happen to see.”

The film deals with a mysterious cosmic event that rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighbourhood to someplace unknown – seemingly in the past, as there are dinosaurs. David Robert Mitchell helms the film, which opens on Friday.
