The third season of Amazon’s”The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” jumps forward at least five years, moving towards a Middle-earth more familiar to fans of Tolkien’s original trilogy.
With it comes an attempt to draw back those who quickly abandoned the series after its early episodes. Talking to Empire, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay indicate they’re making accommodations that will allow anyone to jump on board with the third season.
A big part of that will be a prologue inspired by ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ that will catch everyone up on what happened. McKay says:
“It was a calculated decision to start with real momentum, and hopefully bring a few more people onto the train. The first two seasons were all about building out this world. Throughout that time, we’re lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode.”
Elrond’s brother Elros, also played by Robert Aramayo, is set to appear in a flashback which will reveal more about Numenor’s founding. Elros became the first King of Númenor and sired a bloodline that would ultimately include Aragorn.
The third season will see Middle-earth at war with Sauron’s armies having marched across the whole of the world. Only a few isolated pockets stand in his way as he seeks to build the one ring to rule them all.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” returns to Prime Video on November 11th.
