We’re in the middle of the Godzillaissance right now as the giant kaiju is everywhere and both the fans and critics are lapping it up.
In November came the “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” series which has scored good reviews and made a splashy debut on the Apple TV+ service.
Then last weekend was the launch of Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One” which scored stellar reviews that put it up with the year’s best and tying with “Oppenheimer” as the year’s highest-rated blockbuster on IMDb (both at 8.5/10).
It’s also doing stellar business at the box-office – already becoming the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film of all time in North America.
The awe over it being done on a reported $15 million budget has increased today as director Takashi Yamazaki recently said of those reports (via X) at Tokyo Comic Con: “I wish it were that much”. That indicates he made it for less somehow.
We also saw the recent trailer release of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” which has drawn a lot of attention ahead of that film’s May release and inspired countless memes about Godzilla’s new Barbie-pink color scheme in the film.
The King of the Monsters is everywhere and recently Collider spoke with the “Monarch” producers Chris Black, Tory Tunnell, and Joby Harold and asked the question – is the big boy oversaturating the market? Nope. Black says:
“It’s funny, I think it’s a great time because those three projects you just referenced are all so different and they all sort of fall into such different lanes that they satisfy different desires. The TV show we’re doing is very different from the Legendary features, which is very different from Godzilla Minus One, which I have not seen yet, but I hear is a masterpiece. I can’t wait to get out to see it. I think they all scratch different itches.”
Harold says he sees the TV series as being complementary to the MonsterVerse pictures:
“The Legendary TV show versus the feature, in success both can feed off of each other and complement each other and add to each other’s audiences. I think that’s very much our hope is that we bring audiences to them, and they bring audiences to us, and that it becomes…the word universe is thrown around, but in this instance, it might actually really, really work, and I think it’s something we’re so excited about.”
“Godzilla Minus One” is still available in cinemas now. “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” is currently around halfway through its streaming run on the Apple TV+ service.
