Raspy-voiced Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for her iconic pop anthems like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” has died. She was 75.

She reportedly passed away in a hospital in Portugal. She’d been hospitalised in May, when she was placed into an induced coma after having emergency intestinal surgery.

Last month a spokesperson said she was out of the coma but still “very unwell and in intensive care”. Now, in a statement posted on her official site, it says:

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

A Grammy and Brit award winner, she first broke through with her country-pop ballad “It’s a Heartache” in 1977. Six years later Meat Loaf’s lyricist Jim Steinman penned the two songs that would become her signature tunes (he also penned Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” around the same time).

Both 1983’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and 1984’s “Holding Out for a Hero” topped the charts – the former was designed for an unmade Nosferatu musical, the latter was on the soundtrack for the film “Footloose”. Both songs have been used across various films and TV shows in key moments – most notably “Shrek 2”.

Tyler represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th out of 26 acts, and was made an MBE for her services to music in 2023.

Last year, she released a club version of Total Eclipse of the Heart, produced by David Guetta and Hypaton, called “Together”. This year ‘Total Eclipse passed the one billion streams mark.

She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Robert Sullivan.
