A reboot of the 2001 cult musical comedy “Josie and the Pussycats,” itself based on a popular Archie Comics series and Hanna Barbera cartoon, is in the works at Sony Pictures.
The InSneider broke the news, saying “Wicked” producer Marc Platt is on board. Sony had reportedly been working to acquire the rights, but it wasn’t until Platt boarded that a deal was reached with Archie Comics boss Jon Goldwater.
Platt was also involved in the original film, which was a famous flop – taking in just $15 million globally from a budget somewhere between $22-39 million and scoring mixed critical reviews. However, in the years since, it has become a cult fave.
It followed a girl band who are suddenly and inexplicably thrown into the spotlight with a number one hit, find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy to manipulate the public by delivering subliminal messages through pop music.
Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson, Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo, and Missi Pyle starred.
No specifics about the reboot have emerged, so it’s not clear if this will be set in the same continuity or be a whole new take. A podcast dedicated to the film and hosted by Australian writer/author Maria Lewis is up at Josie and the Podcats.
