Max has announced that Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy “Barbie” is coming to the SVOD service on December 15th, with an American Sign Language version set to be available at that time as well.
The film has been a stellar success all round, earning over $1.4 billion at the global box office and becoming not only the highest grossing film of 2023 but the highest grossing Warner Bros. Pictures title in history.
Yet there’s also been a few hot takes from the darker corners online about the film’s social messaging, from some going beyond calling the film feminist and dubbing it “anti-men”.
In a new interview with 60 Minutes, Gerwig and her partner and “Barbie” co-writer Noah Baumbach were asked about those who perceived the film as having an anti-men agenda:
Gerwig: “The movie is meant to be a big-hearted thing, even though it’s poking fun at everyone.”
Baumbach: “I felt men could take it. I mean, come on.”
Gerwig: “I mean this sounds so silly to say out loud but I love Ken. We love Ken. We also take Ken’s position quite seriously.”
Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera and Issa Rae starred in the film which is currently available on digital VOD platforms.
