In the wake of its $118 million global opening weekend for a budget of less than $10 million, it comes as no surprise that a sequel to this past weekend’s “Backrooms” movie is already in the works.

Deadline reports that the film’s director Kane Parsons is currently looking for a screenwriting collaborator to work on the sequel with. They add no star attachments or green lights have been handed out as yet.

In addition, Parsons made it clear on the film’s press tour his desire to expand the franchise into further features and indicated he’s far from done with the IP with a contract seemingly already in place for more.

Speaking with Variety, Parsons says:

“Without a doubt, ‘Backrooms’ has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film… For people who are into it, I’ve got a contract, and I got a hold at my end, and that means I am definitely not done with ‘Backrooms.’ I’ve got very specific things that I’m working on, things are in the works right now that I am eager to be able to talk about, but, currently, it’s still in a secret mystery world.”

The movie is expected to hold its own this coming weekend against both of Friday’s new films – “Masters of the Universe” which is tipped to open with $30 million, and “Scary Movie” tipped to open at $40 million.

A lot will depend on how much it drops off. The B-CinemaScore and soft audience review scores may unfortunately sour the word of mouth.
