“Justice League” and “300” director Zack Snyder is set to write and direct a reimagining of the 1981 John Carpenter classic “Escape from New York” set up at StudioCanal.
THR broke the news, indicating the film package is currently being put together and will be taken out to market in the coming weeks. Plans are for a theatrical release.
The original film’s story is set in a future where the U.S. had become a totalitarian theocratic police state, and the island of Manhattan is now a walled-off maximum security prison.
Imprisoned former Special Forces officer ‘Snake’ Plissken (Kurt Russell) has twenty-four hours to go in, rescue the U.S. President who is being held by the city prison’s most dangerous crook, and get out again.
Snyder’s take is said to be a “more down and dirty movie” than usual for him, with plenty of practical effects and locations, much like his “Dawn of the Dead” remake in 2004.
The announcement marks the first serious movement on a remake/reboot of the property in years after multiple failed attempts with filmmakers like Radio Silence, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriguez, Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, Breck Eisner, and “Luther” creator Neil Cross all involved at different points.
Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce though their deal at StudioCanal. Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller also produce while Carpenter executive produces.
