More details are emerging from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” following the film’s cover story in Empire Magazine.
One of the big elements of the film is the inclusion of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle – an interesting addition as it sees the vigilante character from several TV-MA rated series suddenly appearing in a PG-13 summer blockbuster film.
The characters have a history in comics, but there’s understandable concern about the tonal disparity and whether it’ll work. Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, tells the outlet that Frank will remain Frank character-wise:
“I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies, but the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know. There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people.”
Bernthal himself says don’t expect his character and Spider-Man to become friends or team up with him:
“Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness. He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper. I think, begrudgingly, Frank would tell you, if he had to be honest, he does care about Peter.”
Meanwhile, Zendaya also spoke with the outlet about reprising her MJ role saying with the memory wipe of Peter’s identity, she gets to play things differently this time:
“It’s easy in a way, because I don’t have to play that I know this person. I don’t have to play all the history that they have together because seemingly, to her, they don’t. As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so heartbreaking,’. You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together.”
Holland also says he’s very proud of the message the film sends about people, especially young people, building a community around them rather than locking themselves away:
“I really hope young people everywhere will watch this film and appreciate the importance of community and that you don’t have to do this alone. In the digital age, it is so easy to sit in your room and waste hours just scrolling, but nothing is better than getting out of the house and socialising with friends. That is just one of the many lessons Peter learns in this movie.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opens in cinemas on July 31st.
