Mel Gibson may still have one foot in Hollywood purgatory, but he’s still one hell of a director and the king of God-based cinema. So his return to the world of the Red Sea pedestrians is much anticipated. Now, the first photo has emerged from The Resurrection of the Christ, Gibson’s two-part sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ.
Production wrapped just last month after a long shoot at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, and in various locations including Puglia, Matera, and Brindisi. Names that mean something to dedicated followers of Football Italia on Channel 4 in the early 1990s.
The photo shows Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus. He is joined in this sequel by Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, Kasia Smutniak as Jesus’ mother Mary, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, and Rupert Everett as Abraham. Everett is having something of a revival right now, with a superb supporting role in Rivals also out there.
The first movie has been moved back by one month, and the second by a year. This means they will both fall on Ascension Day – with Part One on May 6th 2027, and Part Two on May 25th 2028.
For those of you who skipped Sunday school, Ascension Day is a major Christian date celebrated exactly 40 days after Easter Sunday. It commemorates the bodily ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven in the presence of his apostles. Because the date of Easter varies from year to year, Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday.
Day of Ascension is also the title of a popular science fiction novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but I am fairly sure that is unrelated,
