It is time, Big G fans! Godzilla Minus One hit theaters in the US yesterday on general release, and a final trailer has been released. The new entry is already acclaimed, with strong audience and critic scores alongside great box office back in Japan.
On November 3rd it became the biggest IMAX opening ever for a live-action Japanese title in Japan.
It is the first entry in the Japanese version of the franchise since 2016’s Shin Godzilla and also Toho’s first self-distributed U.S. theatrical release. The Wednesday and Thursday previews pulled in $2.1 million and it is expected to make over $10 million this weekend in the US. Good figures for a “foreign” film.
Godzilla Minus One started in devastated post-war Japan, meaning the downtrodden populace will have to face yet another threat.
Takashi Yamazaki, who handled the visual effects on Shin Godzilla, wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One. Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki star in the film.
Yamazaki said in an interview for the Japanese magazine Aera that the worldwide anxiety and government unreliability during the pandemic was one of his major inspirations for the story. He also expressed that he hopes the movie reflects these events clearly. Yamazaki later revealed that he was heavily influenced by Shusuke Kaneko’s Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) —which he has cited as his favorite Godzilla film.
it is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth film in the franchise’s Reiwa era.
