“Daredevil: Born Again” star Charlie Cox has given full credit to Marvel Studios, saying he and his co-star Vincent D’Onofrio are ‘indebted’ to them for the show’s creative reset.

During the writers/actors strike in 2023, it became known that Disney’s partway through production “Daredevil: Born Again” series wasn’t working creatively.

As a result, Disney enlisted a new showrunner and opted to retool the series despite nearly six episodes having been shot. The solution was a new series premiere and season finale, along with new scenes within the other six episodes.

The shift moved the series away from more of a legal procedural to something darker, grittier and more serialised – basically the same “Daredevil” show when it was on Netflix.

In a new interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cox reflects on the shift:

“Once we got into production, it very quickly became apparent that the lessons we’d learnt from the [Ben Affleck] movie that we had got right in the show, we were now almost unlearning a little bit, and that the character really does work best in a serialized platform, but also when it’s darker and grittier and there’s less tongue-in-cheek levity. Huge credit to Marvel and those guys ’cause it takes a huge amount of courage and money to make a U-turn like that. We’re indebted to them, and they really did listen to Vincent and I.”

Cox also played coy about the currently in production third season which appears to include a “Defenders” reunion. Sadly, Cox admits he “can’t say anything” about the new run. He can say that now he has his own show, don’t expect his Matt Murdock to pop up elsewhere: “Marvel have kind of been clear with me, for now at least, that I’m focusing on the show.”

“Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 is now available on Disney+ in full with the third season currently in production.
