Back in Jan, we had the trailer for They Will Kill You. It was a Red Band trailer, and it looked way over the top. Happy days!

They Will Kill You stars Zazie Beetz, Patricia Arquette, Myha’la, Peter Joseph, Tom Felton, and Hether Graham.

The Story

The story is an age-old one:

A woman takes a job as a housekeeper in a NYC high-rise, unaware of the building’s history of disappearances. She soon realizes the community is shrouded in mystery.

Asia (Beetz) and Maria (Myha’la) end up getting separated by their deadbeat dad. Asia runs off and leaves Maria with him. 10 years later, Asia finds her sister and plans to redeem herself and get her sister back.

She starts as a housekeeper in a large apartment block, and on her first night there, things aren’t ‘normal’. A few of the residents are in her room, all wearing pig masks, and out to kill her.

Sadly, for them, Asia has spent time in prison, and she knows how to kick ass. And kick ass she does, heads, legs and arms all come off. This is just the first 10 minutes, and all I will spoil about the story.

You might know more about what’s going on, some descriptions have said, but I’ll not spoil it. It’s not really new, but it’s interesting, and damn is it entertaining.

The Cast

They Will Kill You focuses on Beetz. Fortunately, I like Beetz; she’s very easy on the eye and seems like a good laugh. Asia is a cool character, and she really goes through the mill in this movie. Beetz handles herself well and does the action very, very well.

Arquette is the ‘leader’ of the apartment, and she’s a good ‘bad guy’. By the end of the movie, she’s kick ass as well.

It was nice to see Felton; he was pretty funny. Same with Graham, although she’s not in the movie long, just ‘keep an eye out for her’.

Everyone in the cast went balls out on the action, and kudos to them. The fighting is brutal, and it looks like everyone took a few hard hits.

The Action

I was expecting this to be violent, and boy, it turns the violence up to 11. It reminded me of Kill Bill; you know, when someone would have a hand cut off, then a spray of blood? They Will Kill You was the same; every served limb is followed by arterial spray.

The fighting is really well directed, as the director just lets the actors do the work. There aren’t any close-ups and quick edits. In fact, some of the action sequels are on a level with John Wick. Again, kudos to the actors and director.

I don’t like to ruin a movie like this by tearing the story apart. This isn’t about the story. Don’t get me wrong, it’s solid enough to keep you vested. This movie is more about the action, which is stupidly good fun.

Overall

They Will Kill You is like Rosemary’s Baby in the style of John Wick. The story isn’t the same as Rosemary’s Baby, but it’s similar enough. Throw in some John Wick/Kill Bill action, and we have a movie.

This is an entertaining movie, a few drinks with mates, and a few cheers at the fighting; you can’t go wrong. It’s all turned up to 11, but that’s not a bad thing. Sometimes, we men just want mindless action. My favourite part is seeing a young boy being punched in the face. I laughed way too much when that happened.

This is a short review, as I’m not going to mull over if this movie has any cultural significance or political influence. It’s just a movie, which kicks ass and chews bubble gum, and it’s all out of bubble gum.

I saw online people slating the movie, but I have no idea why. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do: be over the top and entertain. I’m giving it a solid 4 out of 5. Go and have fun with it.
