Is Masters Of The Universe our most anticipated “big” movie of the summer season? I think it might be. Maybe alongside Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (July 17).
Outside those two, movies likely to pull audiences in include Toy Story 5 (June 19), Disney’s live-action Moana (July 10) Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31), Supergirl (June 26), and The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 22).
There’s also The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mortal Kombat II rattling around theaters before the nights start to draw in again. Toy Story and Moana will obviously do massive business, but only Masters Of The Universe is making me feel like I absolutely have to get my ass off the couch and go outside and interact with other human beings.
Why? I don’t know. Something about some colorful and breezy nostalgia, while not taking itself too seriously at all, is appealing to me. Will Hollywood let me down again? It is entirely possible. I guess we will find out soon enough.
Meanwhile, an international trailer just dropped from Amazon MGM Studios. As is traditional for international trailers, there is not a huge amount of new footage, but one or two new shots and a bit more of Adam’s exile to Earth.
The movie picks up nearly two decades after Prince Adam is sent to Earth as a child, his mother’s home planet, to protect him from events on Eternia. In the process, he is from his ancestor’s Power Sword of Grayskull.
When he locates his sword, it reconnects him to his home planet, and he must don the mantle of He-Man and battle for his home against the evil forces of Skeletor (Jared Leto).
Masters Of The Universe also stars Idris Elba as Man at Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Kristen Wiig as Roboto, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, James Purefoy as King Randor, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, and Christian Vunipola as Hussein.
Masters of the Universe opens in cinemas on June 5th.
