By In July, filmmaker James Cameron teased at least one sequel is in the works to 2019’s dystopian future-set feature “Alita: Battle Angel”. At the time he suggested if the films go ahead, they’d be shot in Austin, Texas.
The original film followed an amnesiac cyborg who rediscovers her past life as a battle droid. Adapted from Yukito Kishiro’s original manga, the film was well-received by critics and made over $400 million worldwide.
However, its sizeable $200 million budget meant it wasn’t a profit generator at the box-office. Producer Jon Landau has long been trumpeting talk of a sequel, and did so again today.
Speaking with Screen Rant, he was asked if the sequel was still in talks with him, Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez. Landau’s enthusiasm hasn’t dampened in the slightest:
“Yes, I just answered that I knew before you even got there. I’m very proud of that film, and we were doing it concurrently with Avatar. I was down with Robert on the set doing all that, and Jim was involved too and saw it.
It came on HBO one night, and Jim watched it and called me after he watched it. He said, “Jon, Alita was on, I just decided to watch it. It’s a good movie.” (laughs) And it is! So, I want to be able to definitely do more in that world.”
Nothing has been greenlit in terms of an “Alita” follow-up at present and Cameron is occupied in the meantime with what he’s dubbed a “hectic” two years of post-production on the third “Avatar” film.
