Former “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and “Happy Valley” breakout James Norton are teaming to executive-produce and star in the new period drama “King and Conqueror” for BBC One.
The pair will play 11th century figures William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, respectively.
The series tells the story of a clash that defined the future of a continent for a millenia, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea.
Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.
The series was created and will be executive produced by Michael Robert Johnson (“Sherlock Holmes”). Coster-Waldau will also direct one of the eight episodes.
Kitty Kaletsky, Baltasar Kormákur, Robert Taylor, Dave Clarke, Richard Halliwell, Ed Clarke, Robert Jones and Lindsey Martin also executive produce.
Filming will begin in Iceland in 2024 ahead of a BBC One and BBC iPlayer airing in the UK. No U.S. network or streamer has yet picked up the property.
