It seems the marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu hasn’t been all that good. I like to keep up with all movie news, and I genuinely forgot it was coming out next month.
So far, the marketing has been a little ‘under the radar’. Dave Filoni, the new CEO of Lucasfilm said about the lack of marketing:
“What? Don’t ask me that. My wife’s boyfriend handles all that stuff. I write Ahsoka and play with my collectible action figures.”
I don’t know what he means by “my wife’s boyfriend”. Although the “writing Ahsoka” is a laugh, though, that show had a writer?
One a Year
It’s been 6 years since the last Star Wars movie to hit the cinemas, that was The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Sometime before TROS came out, Kathleen Kennedy had promised the fans one new movie every year.
TROS made $177 million in its opening weekend domestically and went on to make $515 million worldwide. At the moment, Mandalorian and Grogu is on track to make $70 million in the opening weekend.
To put that in perspective, Solo: A Star Wars Saga was released in May 2018. It went on to make $84 million in its opening weekend. This turned out to be a worldwide take of $213 million. That was the lowest ever box office numbers for a Star Wars movie.
You would think that owning Star Wars would be a license to print money, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. As the franchise has gone on, low ratings on the movies and TV shows, and the general crappiness of the brand, fans have wised up.
Does this mean that The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to be the lowest box office take yet? Well, we’ll see in May. I know personally, it’ll be the first Star Wars movie I’m not planning on seeing in the cinema, I’m quite happy to wait for streaming.
Here’s a picture of Filoni without his hat, just to annoy him!
