The original Scream came out of nowhere and started a revolution in horror. Now, you can’t move for horror movie copycats. Then, Scream turned into a franchise, and we’ve just seen the release of Scream 7.

Even the fans are calling the seventh instalment bad, but that hasn’t stopped it from being the first of the franchise to top over $200 million at the box office.

Now, it’s interesting to note two things. Firstly, inflation. The first movie made $170 million in 1996, which, adjusted for inflation, is $380 million. So the seventh one doesn’t have the biggest box office take, not yet.

Secondly, there was a ‘boycott’ of the Scream 7 as well. The sixth movie, which was trying to move away from Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell), starred Melissa Barrera. Before the seventh went into production, Barrera got herself fired over comments about the Israel-Hamas war.

At the premiere of the seventh movie, demonstrators were spotted waving Palestine flags, playing drums, and chanting:

“David Ellison, you can’t hide, you’re supporting genocide!”

Now, as with most boycotts, they usually have the opposite effect. Remember the boycott of the new Harry Potter game, the one that went on to be one of the biggest games in 2025?

Did the ‘boycott’ of Scream 7 help push it over the $200 million mark? Who can say? However, making that much means they greenlit an eighth movie.

Writers

Kevin Williamson, the original creator of the franchise and who directed the seventh movie, will be handing writing duties over to Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. They are known for creating the series Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. This was also produced and created by Ruin Johnson.

The Zuckerman sisters are also known for writing the pilot episode of the recently cancelled Buffy series.

There’s no news on who will be returning for Scream 8, chances are they will be looking at getting Neve Campbell back, again.
