The last weekend of March, the calm before “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” storm, saw only one small newcomer that fizzled – “They Will Kill You”.
The Zazie Beetz-led action feature is headed for an opening in third place of around $5.5 million domestically and a further $1.4 million overseas from 66 territories.
Scoring mixed reviews and a dud ‘B-‘ CinemaScore, the New Line title is technically the first collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and David Ellison’s Skydance (who has a stake in production company Nocturna). Not an auspicious start, as it looks like it’ll struggle to even reach its $20 million production budget.
“Project Hail Mary” remains on top with a second weekend of $53.1 million – a phenomenal hold with a drop of just 34%. That puts its second domestic weekend as one of the highest for a non-franchise film and better than the second weekends of the likes of “Oppenheimer” or “Dune Part Two” which both pulled in millions in revenue and % drops in the low-mid 40s. Worldwide, the title is set to pass $250 million this weekend.
Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” keeps going strong with an estimated fourth weekend of $11.3 million and a running total of $137.6 million – it’ll take second place. Rounding out the top five are Indian film “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” at $4.7 million in its second weekend (a 54% drop) and “Reminders of Him” with $4.6 million in its third weekend.
Radio Silence’s “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” has sadly failed to catch on, the title taking just $4 million in its second weekend – a drop of 56%.
