“Squid Game” alum Lee Byunghun and “Heavenly Ever After” actress Han Jimin will star as the leads in Disney+ spy thriller series “The Koreans”.
The project is a reimagining of FX’s critically acclaimed Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell-led series “The Americans” which followed two Soviet KGB intelligence officers posing as an American married couple in the 1980s.
This take will be set in South Korea in the early 1990s. The loving couple at the heard of a seemingly ordinary middle-class family hides a secret from their friends, neighbors and even their own children – they’re both elite North Korean spies working to bring down South Korea from within.
As they wrestle with issues of loyalty, patriotism and identity, a relentless Korean counterintelligence agent draws closer to exposing them.
Filming has begun on the series, which will stream exclusively on Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the United Statates.
The project is backed by Imaginus and Studio AA, with Ahn Gilho (“The Glory”) directing and Park Eunkyo (“Mother”) writing.
