By If there’s one sentiment dominating the movie landscape in 2023, it’s that Marvel Studios is no longer a guaranteed hitmaker like in past years and its box-office is in trouble.
A recent report at Forbes, however, disputes that latter conjecture, saying the reality of Marvel’s woes has been “overstated” by increasingly hyperbolic media and the company is still “doing pretty good right now” despite their problems.
The site indicates that the final global gross for all 22 films in the Infinity Saga – from “Iron Man” to “Avengers: Endgame” – delivered a per-film average of around $935 million.
Since the Infinity Saga ended, Marvel’s releases have taken over $8.1 billion across ten movies so far (not including the still-going “The Marvels”) which has led to a per-film average of around $815 million.
They point out we haven’t had a single ‘Avengers’ movie in this new saga thus far, with those movies the ones that really pushed up the Infinity Saga’s total and per film average – especially the last two “Avengers” films which made nearly $5 billion combined on their own.
They also indicate the pandemic alone accounts for most of the rest of the downturn in Marvel Studios’ average box office performance. That is, until this year, when the box-office has been bad for anyone who is not Barbenheimer or Mario.
Whilst “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” underperformed, it’ll still potentially make the box-office Top 10 for the year because everyone else is faring so badly.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” meanwhile scored blockbuster results with $845.5 million, and non-MCU Marvel adaptation “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” managed nearly $700 million as well – easily making it one of the year’s top earners.
The recent and rather spectacular failure of “The Marvels” however is adding credence to the argument that audiences are suffering from superhero fatigue and Marvel is having issues.
The obvious question is will that sentiment change with their next release – Marvel Studios has only one title next year with “Deadpool 3,” which is about as guaranteed a hit as any studio can make?
