The relentless scallop dredging of the 1980s movie landscape continues. We previously reported that Bloodsport, the 1988 Jean Claude van Damme classic, was being ‘reimagined’ by A24. Now the project has a writer/director: Michaela Coel.
Michaela Coel is the creator and star of TV Shows Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You. She also appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Last Jedi. Not sure why I mentioned that last one.
I’m sure I just lack vision, but I’m struggling to see the synergy here?
Bloodsport is the movie that put van Damme on the map. Top fighters from around the world are invited to a secret knockout MMA tournament called the Kumite. They fight. That’s about it.
The movie was based on the ‘true’ story of Frank Dux: ninja, marine, CIA spy, medal of honour winner, pirate vanquisher and real-life winner of the Kumite. Clearly a world class bullshit martial artist.
He once claimed that the Kumite knockout tournament comprised of 60 rounds, which would require over 1 Quintillion competitors. Somehow they still kept it a secret.
Plot details for the reimagining are unknown at this point, but I’ll wager that they’ll be reimagining HARD. The basic concept will obviously be the same but the characters will not. Will there be a women’s tournament this time?
Michaela Coel had this to say on the project:
I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FUCKING GO.
How about let’s fucking not?
