It’s not all that often I look forward to something, even something I want to see in the cinema. However, Backrooms is something I’m looking forward to.
We reported a while ago that Backrooms had a feature production on the way. It’s been created by YouTuber Kane Parsons. He made a video about a mysterious set of rooms and hallways that didn’t seem to go anywhere.
The movie will star Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Avan Jogia, Lukita Maxwell, Renate Reinsve, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. I’ll admit, being a fan of the original Backrooms, I hope the cast isn’t too big. The whole idea of the original series was how lacking it was.
The premise is simple: a guy with a camera ends up in a series of halls and rooms, and nothing else. Until something else does turn up and he must run. There’s no music, no love triangle, no subplots; just ends rooms and wondering what is around the corner. Genuinely, some of the episodes are edge-of-the-seat stuff.
As the Backrooms went on, the structure became more complex. The genius was that there were hints to what was going on, but it was always kept under wraps. You’re as clueless as the cameraman, but you cannot help but watch.
Keep It Simple
Backrooms is being produced by A24, and I’m really hoping they don’t ‘produce’ too much and let Parsons run free with his ideas. There’s no need to explain everything; the less you know, the more intriguing it is. Unlike most movies these days, which explain who the good guy is and who the bad guy is.
The mystery of the Backrooms is half the fun. However, I see a lot of people not liking this idea, because they must have everything spelt out. I’m hoping it will be like the original and leave you guessing, so everyone will have a different opinion about it.
Backrooms will be released on the 29th May, and if it’s in the cinemas, I’ll be going.
