Project Hail Mary was already quite far up our list of most anticipated movies of 2026, but now the buzz around the movie is building as more people get to see more of it.
Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, an astronaut who wakes up on a ship with no memory of his life or his purpose in space. He is the sole survivor of an Earth-saving mission to a faraway sun, where he must team up with an alien called Rocky in an attempt to complete what he was sent to do.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are known for directing 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, as well as writing the Spider-Verse movies, and walking away from Lucasfilm and the Solo movie over “creative differences”.
The script this time is by Drew Goddard, who also adapted Author Andy Weir’s novel The Martian into the 2011 movie directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. That received seven Oscar nominations.
As the release date approaches, more people are seeing either parts of it or all of it. Among those to have seen it in its entirety is actor Josh Gad. He was effusive in his praise on Instagram, where he wrote:
“Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the first masterpiece of 2026.
I don’t know how the hell they did it, but Lord, Miller, Goddard and Sood, along with Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Conner have delivered a PERFECT adaptation of a book I thought was impossible to adapt. The novel by Andy Weir is one of my all-time favorites and the movie somehow matches it pound for pound.
See this @amazonmgmstudios movie on the biggest screen possible. Ryan Gosling has never been better. I cannot wait to see this movie again. It will restore your faith in humanity and the power of love and courage.”
Some online outlets have now seen extended previews. When giving interviews ahead of these previews, Miller told Gizmodo:
“It’s a hopeful movie, and this relationship, at its core, these are two beings who could not be more different [but], when they come together, are able to accomplish amazing things, so that’s what drew us to the book in the first place and drew us to the project. Hopefully, people will leave the movie feeling a sense of optimism about what’s possible.”
Lord & Miller also revealed that the scenes set in space will be released in full, 1.43:1 IMAX, while flashback scenes set on Earth will be a more traditional 2.39:1 aspect ratio.
They confirmed that the scenes they saw are “high energy” and, in places, very funny, but what they saw was also highly emotional. Others who have seen the film say that Project Hail Mary could potentially make you cry, a lot.
Project Hail Mary arrives in theaters on March 20th and has been confirmed as having an epic run time of 2 hours and 46 minutes.
