We all used to say “Just give it to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to run!” when it became clear that Lucasfilm leadership had absolutely no clue what it was doing with Star Wars. Then, after The Mandalorian Season 3 and Ahsoka, we said “Well, maybe let’s not be too hasty!” Maybe we should be careful what we wish for, as news out of Lucasfilm late yesterday shows a major step up for Filoni.
Dave Filoni is the new chief creative officer of Lucasfilm, according to Vanity Fair. Filoni will now work more directly with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and alongside veteran producer turned head of development Carrie Beck to “originate and shepherd” the next generation of Star Wars shows and movies by putting as chick in them and making them lame.
Filoni got his start working alongside George Lucas on the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars show and is known for having an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars lore. In the article, Filoni says he’s going to be inside the development, rather than just advising:
“In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.
I’m not telling people what to do. But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.
I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, ‘Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this.”
Filoni will continue developing his own film and explore a possible second season of Ahsoka alongside his new role. Will any of this save Luicasfilm, who can’t buy a commercial and critical hit right now?
