More details and new photos about Amazon Prime Video’s live-action “Spider-Noir” series have emerged via a feature piece in Esquire.
The series tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Nicolas Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.
Cage reprises the role of the character he voiced in animation form in 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” while Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serve as the series co-showrunners.
While the cast has been known for some time, the nature of their roles hasn’t. Today, the trade publication reports that Jack Huston will be playing Flint Marko/Sandman, Brendan Gleeson will be playing Silvermane who is “the subject of repeated assassination attempts” in the series, Li Jun Li is playing a nightclub chanteuse named Cat Hardy.
As the magazine says, the Cat Hardy name will immediately draw a connection between her and Felicia Hardy/Black Cat from “Spider-Man,” but it’s unclear if that’s the case here or if it’s just an easter egg.
Uziel also explained why Cage is playing a version of Ben Reilly, not Peter Parker, saying: “Peter Parker feels very synonymous with a high school kid. Boyish. On his way up. [Ben] could be more easily adjusted to fit a pessimistic misanthrope… The reason he’s named Ben Riley is explained. We’ll leave it at that.”
Lamorne Morris, Lukas Haas, Abraham Popoola, Karen Rodriguez, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, and Andrew Robinson co-star.
Harry Bradbeer directs the first two episodes and executive produces alongside “Spider-Verse” regulars Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal.
Sony Pictures Television is producing the series which will be available to watch in both black-and-white and color and aims to hit both Prime Video and MGM+ in the Spring.
