Westworld meets Predator via Lone Survivor? It could work! Another potential proof point to our fast-developing theory that streaming is now the official home of everything we would have rented from a VHS store back in the day (see The Wrecking Crew and Heads of State) is War Machine.

Coming from Netflix, it is led by Jack Reacher himself, Alan Ritchson.

It follows the final stage of US Army Ranger selection. When it is underway, with the candidates in an isolated forest region, the training exercise for the elite team turns into a fight for survival when things stop feeling controlled and start feeling like they are being hunted.

Soon fear, fatigue, and paranoia start corroding the team’s efforts against an unimaginable new threat – a mechanoid of incredibly advanced design that won’t stop until its found and killed them all.

Yeah, that definitely reads straight from the back of a VHS cover.

It co-stars Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber. It was shot in 2024 in Victoria, Australia. The good news is that it has been rated R for ‘strong violence, grisly images and language’. Check, check, and check on the VHS rental requirements list for a teenage boy!

It is directed by Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) from a script he co-wrote with James Beaufort. It is produced by Hughes, Greg McLean, Todd Lieberman, and Alexander Young.

War Machine arrives on Netflix on March 6th.
