Oscar and Emmy nominee Diane Lane (“FEUD: Capote vs. The Swans,” “Unfaithful”) has been cast in Mike Flanagan’s new “The Exorcist” film which will be produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment at Universal Pictures.

She marks the third addition to the cast following Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe, who were previously announced. Filming will get underway in New York City shortly.

The film is an all-new story set in “The Exorcist” universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” Flanagan essentially was given clearance to create whatever story he wanted, and so is both writing and directing.

Plot and character specifics are under wraps. Previously, Flanagan says the plan is to do something that has “never been done within the franchise – something that honours what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia”. He also aims to make the scariest movie he’s ever made.

David Robinson and Jason Blum produce. The film is set to be released theatrically on Friday, March 12th 2027.

Lane most recently led the Jan Komasa thriller “Anniversary,” appeared in David E. Kelley’s limited series “A Man in Full” and lent her voice to Disney’s “Inside Out 2”.
