Cinemas that showed Netflix’s “Stranger Things” finale made a bunch of money over New Year’s.
Variety reports that cinemas pulled in between $25-28 million on the one-off event, which saw screenings on the evening of New Year’s Eve and across New Year’s Day.
Because of certain regulations, AMC and Cinemark charged $20 for a concession voucher to attend the screening as opposed to conventional tickets. Regal Cinemas and other circuits charged $11.
AMC says it generated $15 million from the more than 753,000 people who bought food and beverage credits. The chain had slightly over one-third of the total theater count.
The result is being seen as good news for cinemas with AMC chief Adam Aron hinting today the streamer are already looking for more ways to have its programming in cinemas, saying the two companies have “actively commenced discussing what additional Netflix programming can be shown on AMC’s giant screens”.
Netflix also had a big success in cinemas with a sing-along version of “Kpop Demon Hunters”.
James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” won the more conventional New Year’s Eve at the box-office with $8.1 million for the day, ending the year with just over $250 million domestically and set to cross $1 billion globally this week.
Disney’s “Zootopia 2” took in $4.6 million, closing out 2025 with $337.9 million domestically. “Marty Supreme” was third with $2.4 million, bringing its domestic total to roughly $39 million.
