Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck best known for his Emmy-winning work directing HBO’s acclaimed mini-series “Chernobyl,” will direct the new live-action “Assassin’s Creed” TV series.

This will mark his third collaboration with Netflix, following his directing the first two episodes of the 2015 series “Bloodline” and the Adam Sandler-led feature “Spaceman”.

Renck previously directed the mini-series “The Last Panthers,” and helmed famous episodes of “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Vikings” among others. He was originally going to do the series premieres of both HBO’s “The Last of Us” and “Dune: Prophecy” but exited over scheduling issues and creative differences, respectively.

The TV series synopsis says the “Assassin’s Creed” show will center “on the secret war between two shadowy factions – one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

The game series has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide and began in 2007, exploring the war between the rival secret orders of the Assassins and the Templars – each entry was set in a different time period, accessed from the present day via a machine known as the Animus.

Toby Wallace (“Euphoria”), Lola Petticrew (“Say Nothing”), Zachary Hart (“Slow Horses”) and Laura Marcus (“Death by Lightning”) star as regulars.

Roberto Patino (“Westworld,” “Sons of Anarchy”) and David Wiener (“Halo,” “The Killing”) are serving as creators, showrunners and executive producers. Gerard Guillemot, Matt O’Toole, Genevieve Jones, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill will also executive produce.

The property was previously developed as a Justin Kurzel-directed 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, which flopped.
