It was the movie that unleashed Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich on the world. It was probably a key factor in bringing us Independence DayStargate then went on to birth three television series. Stargate: SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate: Universe.

So the 1994 film became a franchise that is some kind of big deal in television terms.

Now, Amazon MGM Studios is to resurrect the Stargate with Martin Gero set as creator and showrunner. Gero worked as a writer and producer on all three previous live-action shows. Gero says in a statement:

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

It is, of course, being referred to as a “bold new chapter” (yawn), but the smart money is on it being set in the same continuity and won’t be a reboot.

Gero will executive produce alongside Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tory Tunnell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters). Of course, Emmerich and Devlin are also in for points.

Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi also return from the original shows, this time as consulting producers.
