HBO Max has premiered the first five minutes from the season premiere of its DC Studios series “Lanterns” which premieres this Sunday on HBO.

The clip begins in the mid 1990s and sees a young John Stewart watching an interview with a younger version of Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan before being subjected to some highly unconventional parenting.

Then we meet the grown-up John in 2016 as he gets into a car with the older Hal Jordan.

In the comics and series, Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers.

The series follows experienced Hal and John as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.

Set within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, the tone is akin to “True Detective” and other gritty dramas the network is known for.

Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country”) is showrunner and executive producer and writes the series with Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and comic book scribe Tom King (“Supergirl”).

Along with Chandler and Pierre, the series also stars Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

“Lanterns” releases on HBO this Sunday.
