Actress and playwright Ana Nogueira (“The Vampire Diaries”) has been set to pen the standalone feature “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios according to THR.
Nogueira was reportedly quietly hired to pen a “Supergirl” movie last year when Warners was developing the project as a spinoff of “The Flash” – the plan at the time to follow actress Sasha Calle’s take on the character from that film.
That plan was scuttled when James Gunn and Peter Safran came in to oversee a wholly reorganised DC slate of movies and several planned projects were tossed out.
In January it was revealed a “Supergirl” film would be on the slate, but one without any connection to “The Flash” and would be inspired by Tom King’s 2021 comic mini-series which sought to redefine the character and sees Kara Zor-El getting caught up in a young alien girl’s epic quest for revenge.
Gunn said in a video at the time: “Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
The trade says Gunn and Safran liked the work Nogueira had done on the previous “Supergirl” project and quietly brought her back, even giving her an overall DC writing deal.
No director is attached to the project yet and Nogueira’s new deal only recently closed.
