By Though filmmaker Christopher Nolan is a champion of cinema on the big screen and the overall theatrical experience, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about the home viewing of his films.
Quite the contrary it seems. The filmmaker introduced a Los Angeles screening of “Oppenheimer” which put the spotlight the film’s crafts.
The event saw him reuniting with much of the film’s crew, and speaking during the event he says of the Blu-ray release that he and his team have been “working very hard on it for months”.
He goes on to explain why it’s important to him, and in the process takes a swipe at streaming services and their recent penchant for pulling product:
“I’m known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but the truth is, the way the film goes out at home is equally important. ‘The Dark Knight’ was one of the first films where we formatted it specially for Blu-ray release because it was a new form at the time.
In the case of ‘Oppenheimer,’ we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version… trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you.”
The film, which earned $950 million at the worldwide box office and became the highest-grossing biopic of all time, is expected to debut on Universal’s streaming service Peacock at some point – but no date has been set as yet.
The film be available to purchase on 4K UHD and Blu-ray along with other digital platforms on November 21st.
