Revisiting Highlander recently, I was struck by the fact that it hasn’t aged well at all, yet somehow remains outrageously entertaining.
Connery remains good value as Ramirez, getting second billing, and a big payday, despite his role being nothing more than an extended cameo. His entire contribution was contractually obliged to be filmed in seven days or less, amounting to less than 12 minutes of screen time, and some say under 40 lines of dialogue.
Clancy Brown’s Kurgan chews scenery and cackles maniacally at every turn. The flashbacks through different time periods remain fun. The Queen soundtrack remains on point. However, the whole thing just creaks a bit and feels very old now, like my knees.
The remake has us interested, as there could be a chance here to really build out this world. One thing that is definitely building is the cast.
We already knew about Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang, and Drew McIntyre. Now they are to be joined by Siobhán Cullen (Bodkin), Jun Jong-seo (Burning), Nassim Lyes (Under Paris), and Kevin McKidd (Rome).
John Wick director Chad Stahelski is behind the remake for Amazon MGM Studios.
Cavill is Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez (Crowe), the Highlander battles other immortals across the centuries, until only two remain.
Cullen will play a police psychiatrist who helps MacLeod. Jong plays a Watcher sect member, Lyes is an immortal pursuing MacLoed. McKidd’s role is not clear. They join Bautista as The Kurgen, Gillan as MacLeod’s original wife, Hounsou as an African immortal, Irons as the leader of the Watchers, and Abela as MacLeod’s modern romantic interest.
Filming was delayed by an injury to Cavill, but it will start straight after the New Year.
