James Gunn’s new DCU tentpole Superman has smashed HBO records when released on their Max streaming platform.
According to numbers being reported in Variety, the cape caper snagged 13 million views in its first ten days on HBO Max, which marked the biggest ten-day audience for a movie on the platform ever. It also beat previous record holder Barbie comfortably.
Warner Bros. Discovery also reports that the movie drove a spike in other Superman related content across the streamer.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story saw a 670% bump. 1978s Superman: The Movie had a 155% uplift, while Superman Returns jumped by 120%.
Man of Steel jumped 40%.
At the box office, it moved through the $600 million barrier to become the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year, behind Lilo & Stitch and zeitgeist riding phenomenon of A Minecraft Movie.
Warner Bros. Are obviously feeling pretty good about their new cinematic universe as they have already greenlit the follow up which is set for a 2026 production and 2027 release.
This could, however, be yet another example of how COVID and the closedowns forever programmed audiences to consume at home more than in movie theaters.
Meanwhile, the rest of the DCU is bubbling away with Peacemaker finishing up its second season run, Supergirl wrapped, and Clayface in production.
