I love getting interviews with people, especially to talk about movies. This time, it’s with director Racheal Cain. She’s just completed a movie, Somnium, which I have reviewed and is on streaming.

Somnium is Cain’s first movie, which she wrote and directed herself. It won First Place in the Los Angeles Screenplay Competition before being shortlisted for the Breaking Through the Lens Initiative at Cannes in 2020.

It’s taken her about 13 years to get Somnium to a finished production. Hard work got her through, though, and the finished movie is very good.

Enough from me, here’s Cain talking about her new movie.

Wasn’t she interesting? It’s one of those interviews where I could have chatted with her all day. She had been doing interviews all day, though, so I figured she didn’t.

With my review of Somnium, you can tell she has put a lot of thought and effort into the script. It wasn’t a case of banging something out, without any rewrites. She put a lot of thought into the story, different layers, and it shows.

I’ve seen Somnium twice now, and it won’t be the last time. I’m sure it’s one of those movies that I will see again and find something new in the writing. A hidden gem of a movie.

Cain says she’s having a break from working at the moment, but we hope to see her again. I think she has more interesting movies to make for the future.
