Top Gun: Maverick and F1 have been two of the most crowd-pleasing cinematic events of the last few years. Next, the director of both is turning his attention to Miami Vice, a movie remake based on the iconic 1980s television show from Michael Mann.
Now, Universal Pictures has set an August 6th, 2027 release date.
The original show ran for five seasons in the 1980s. It followed two detectives, Crockett and Tubbs, working undercover in Miami. It raised that city into the global consciousness and was famous for its high 80s fashion and up-to-the-minute music choices. It also looked and felt more like a movie, which was totally at odds with the prevailing television style at the time.

The 2006 remake movie, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, is something of a hidden gem. It is almost entirely absent of exposition, requiring the viewer to lean right in and pay attention to detail.
Dan Gilroy (Andor) is writing the script for this new adaptation, while Dylan Clark (The Batman) is producing.
With the news of the release date comes official confirmation that this version will be a period piece. According to the press release it will:
“…explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami…”
The release also states that it will be:
“…inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking…”
Miami Vice will be shot in IMAX.
