A cryptocurrency-themed conspiracy thriller is set to star Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson, with Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman set for the big chair. Killing Satoshi will be set against the backdrop of one of the biggest mysteries of the current world – who the hell is Satoshi Nakamoto?

Thought to be some kind of secret identity, he is the mysterious and elusive creator of cryptocurrency, effectively the cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.

After emerging into the mainstream in the late 2000s, the concept of cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin in particular, has now become a regular investment fixture. After years of trying to deny it was ever a thing, to ridicule it, or keep it at arm’s length, governments, established investors, funds, and banks have all started to pile in on it.

A recent Bitcoin bear market stalled when an original whale cashed out somewhere in the region of $20 billion after originally investing for, in comparison, peanuts. It is known for its volatility, and a parade of “Crypto Bros” who think blind luck is an investment strategy. As anyone with a position knows, it is something of a rollercoaster.

Blockchain experts estimate Nakamoto’s personal fortune would be worth about $64 billion today, which would place him among the top 20 richest people in the world. However, his coins haven’t moved, and one of the richest hauls of digital treasure in human history remains untouched.

Filming is set to begin in October in London, with Nick Schenk (Gran Torino, The Mule) writing.

It will tell the story of an elite cabal and their attempts to gain control of the crypto landscape through political intrigue and high-tech espionage. A race against time unfolds as forces across the globe, from governments, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley, wage an all-out battle for control.

An elite cabal waking up to the fact that there was a party financial going on that they weren’t invited to and couldn’t control and influence? Well, well, well…

Ryan Kavanaugh, Lawrence Grey, and Shane Valdez will produce Killing Satoshi. Liman has clearly moved on from the underwater thriller Deeper after the Tom Cruise vehicle stalled over budget arguments.

Liman is also rumored for a feature-length adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand.
