The 80s were the best decade for movies! One of those classics was Crocodile Dundee. I say classic, I’m not sure it’s that strong, but it’s a movie fondly remembered by kids of that generation. Say it with me:

“That’s not a knife…this is a knife!”

I hope you did the accent. The adventures of Mick Dundee struck a chord with US audiences, and everyone seemed to love it so much so that it had a sequel.

Crocodile Dundee was edited outside of Australia. Apparently, our Aussie friends had a longer cut of the movie than the rest of the world. The movie is having a re-release in 2025, with a new 4k version.

When movies have a re-release they sometimes have to have go through classification again. Some movies are edited and some are issued with a ‘note’ at the start of the movie, warning about things like “discriminatory stereotypes”, see below.

The reclassification of Crocodile Dundee means it will be edited, which is being called the Encore Cut. A simple warning note at the start of the movie won’t cut it, not when looked through with a ‘modern lens’. Reportedly, two and a half minutes of the movie will be cut out.

You Know Which Scene

You know what scene it is, Mick meets an older, umm, person, but not sure if it is a he or a she. Mick checks by grouping the person. This kind of thing is not funny or welcome in 2025. A statement from the production company says about the Encore Cut:

“…some years ago, Paramount Pictures and other distributors requested the reference to the crossdresser be edited from the original film, as they found it offensive. We agreed to that request”.

There is also another scene where Mick gropes someone else. Paul Hogan, who was Crocodile Dundee, has been asked about the edits, he said:

“…this guy is a folk hero around the world. He shouldn’t be groping people. And I thought yeah that’s right, he shouldn’t be, so take it out. I mean, he did it in all innocence, in naivety, but it’s better without it”.

We found this information in an older article from earlier this year. The Encore Cut of Crocodile Dundee came out in May in Australia.

Discriminatory Stereotypes

Mentioned in this article were complaints about another movie. In 2020, the most complained about movie to the British Board of Film Classification was a re-issue of, wait for it, Flash Gordon.

91 people complained that Flash Gordon contained “discriminatory stereotypes”.

It’s not just me, right? I haven’t seen Flash for a while, but I cannot, for the life of me, think where there are stereotypes. Is it that blonde people are dumb? Deep Roy was in it, was it against short people? Bird people are loud? Is it that General Kala was dressed in black? Maybe it’s about British people always being cast as the villain?

Unlike Crocodile Dundee, Flash wasn’t edited, but did have the note warning viewers.

All I can say about this entire thing is: Thank goodness for physical media, they can’t edit that!

By the way, if you haven’t seen it, Drunken Yoda made an excellent video about Flash Gordon.
