If you are an Outposter of a certain age, then a certain period in television remains a foundational childhood memory. The era of the high-concept show, usually centred around some kind of super-vehicle. There was the short-lived Street Hawk, a similarly short-lived spin-off from Blue Thunder, the exceptional (for a season) Airwolf, and the Daddy of them all – Knight Rider.
One man really could make a difference. And what a man. Housewives’ favorite, the young David Hasslehoff, with luxurious, buoffant hair and the sleekest leather jacket known to man, was Michael Knight. He was a detective who became an agent for The Foundation for Law and Government. He was partnered with KITT, a modified, artificially intelligent, and indestructible Trans Am.
Together, they fought criminals who operated above the law, as long as it was in places that looked a lot like Southern California. You knew who the bad guys were because they always wore three-piece suits.
And that theme tune man… that theme tune!
There have been many attempts to bring Knight Rider back over the years, with Team Knight Rider, TV movies like Knight Rider 2000, and a sequel series that lasted about a season back in the mid-2000s.
None of them hit the right note, because they all managed to get the show completely wrong. As ridiculous as it was, as camp as it could be, Knight Rider always took itself completely seriously and carried itself with an earnestness that made the silliness work and the camp just part of the fun.
So who could actually stand a chance of getting it right? Who can blend a bit of camp with some nostalgia, treating source material with respect, building on the mythology, and delivering some overblown drama with a completely straight face, while keeping the audience in on the joke?
Well, they could do a lot worse than this decision. They are letting the creators of Cobra Kai loose on Knight Rider.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are in talks for a film adaptation of the 1980s show. The trio would write the screenplay and produce, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg in early talks to direct.
Also producing would be Gary Barber, Chris Stone, Kelly McCormick, and David Leitch.
Perfect – with one slight tweak. Make it a series!
