Marvel’s Eternals was the only Marvel movie I have ever needed more than one sitting to get through. Whatever anyone thinks of Marvel and the MCU, from whatever phase, you can honestly say that the movies have never been boring.

Except Eternals, which committed the cardinal sin for a superhero movie. It was so boring that it made me consider that my time was better spent doing something else, so I turned it off halfway through. I went back to complete it a few days later. It has never been revisited.

One of the film’s stars, Kumail Nanjiani, has spoken openly about the reaction to the movie, and how the landscape after the film came out has been very different from what he expected.

The contract he signed, like all MCU contracts, was extensive. Speaking with Mike Birbiglia on his podcast, Nanjiani laid it all out:

“It came out right after COVID, so I had a year and a half at home to be just like, ‘When this thing comes out. It came out, received really bad reviews, and didn’t do well. It shattered me too much. That was when I was like, ‘Oh, I need to go to therapy to figure this out.’

I was like, ‘This is going to be my job for the next ten years.’ I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign on for all this stuff. You’re like, ‘Okay, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year, and in between, I’ll do my own little things. Whatever I want to do.’

None of that happened. For me, what really hit me was realising that too much of my self-esteem is wrapped up in other people’s reactions to my work. People have way bigger problems than this.”

Nanjiani did reprise his role for an episode of What If…? alongside Kathryn Hahn. Meanwhile, the events of Eternals have been proven central to the go-forward MCU by the events of Captain America: Brave New World. In that movie, President Ross explains that a new metal, adamantium, has been discovered on “Celestial Island”, which was formed when the Celestial Tiamut emerged in the Indian Ocean in Eternals.

Anyone who knows their Marvel knows why adamantium is important.

Will any of the Eternals turn up again in the MCU?
