By Though the actor’s strike shut down his production halfway through its shoot in Morocco, filmmaker Ridley Scott tells The New Yorker says he’s already been editing the 90 minutes of finished footage he was able to capture so far for his “Gladiator” sequel.
Scott says he’s ready to pick up filming as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strikes are over. In the meantime, he’s been polishing the half of the film he has got so far.
This will reportedly include a scene in which Paul Mescal’s hero fights a pack of baboons. The sequence came about because of a video Scott saw of baboons attacking tourists in Johannesburg: “Baboons are carnivores. Can you hang from that roof for two hours by your left leg? No! A baboon can.’.”
Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Matt Lucas, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger and Pedro Pascal co-star in the follow-up to the Best Picture Oscar winner which grossed a whopping $503 million worldwide.
The story of the new film remains under wraps, though we do know it follows a grown-up Lucius (Mescal) and will see several returning characters (Nielsen, Hounsou, Jacobi). At the time brothers Caracalla (Quinn) and Geta (Hechinger) jointly ruled as Emperors, the former a bloodthirsty tyrant who ordered his younger brother’s murder.
Paramount Pictures will open “Gladiator 2” in cinemas on November 22nd 2024.
