Filmmaker Zack Snyder has revealed that his upcoming two-part space opera film “Rebel Moon” shares the same cinematic universe as his Netflix zombie film franchise “Army of the Dead”.
Speaking with Total Film ahead of the release of the first of the “Rebel Moon” movies next month, Snyder says his “Army of the Dead” has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into that film. That includes “a character from Rebel Moon in the Army of the Dead animated series that we never did.”
He explains that along with the released prequel film “Army of Thieves,” an animated series titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” was also in the works but never completed production.
The unfinished series is what boasted the crossovers:
“At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there are characters in that other dimension that they come across. In Rebel Moon, they’re in this bar, and one of the aliens is one of the characters from the animatic. So it’s definitely a shared universe.”
Just how far did that show, an anime-inspired series chronicling the early days of the undead outbreak, get? Snyder says the scripts, animatics and voice recording was all completed: “So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run.”
“Rebel Moon Part 1” arrives on Netflix on December 22nd with “Rebel Moon Part 2” coming on April 19th. “Army of the Dead” and “Army of Thieves” are now available on Netflix.
Netflix also recently announced that the Snyderverse DCEU is coming to the streamer including “Man of Steel,” “Batman v. Superman,” “Justice League,” “Wonder Woman,” “Birds of Prey,” “Wonder Woman: 1984,” “Suicide Squad” and “The Suicide Squad” all on December 1st.
