The Amityville Horror is notorious for a number of reasons. The original story follows a multiple murder in November, 1974. 23-year old Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family at their home, a large Dutch Colonial house situated in a suburban neighborhood in Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island, New York.

In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the house with their three children and dog, Harry. After 28 days, the Lutzes fled the house, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena while living there.

A book was written about this by Jay Anson. It told a terrifying story about strange events in the house, all apparently corroborated by their Catholic priest. The book was adapted into a famous horror movie in 1979. The movie birthed a franchise.

The only issue is that many people now consider the whole thing to have been completely made up. Large numbers of people, from neighbors to the local indian tribe, have come forward to challenge the story. The Lutzes themselves have been involved in legal action around the claims, and have even passed polygraph tests around the subject matter.

Whatever happened, there has been no shortage of interest in the story. There was even a Ryan Reynolds-led remake. Now BoulderLight Pictures (Barbarian) and Divide/Conquer (Heart Eyes) are going back to the Amityville well.

This new take is from Joseph and Vanessa Winter (Deadstream) from their own script. New Line Cinema has first look. Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath will produce, and the project is being fast-tracked.

According to the report in Deadline, the story will avoid the IP of the book or films by not focusing on the DeFeo Jr. murders or the Lutz haunting. Instead, it will focus on the house itself.
